I’m labeling it “Fall” rather than\n“Summer” for truth in advertising – it doesn’t\nusually get distributed until Fall, when we can get\nstudents to help with the mailing of hundreds of\ncopies. Last year was another busy one, with a\nfaculty search helping add to the mix of\ndepartmental activities. One thing that was\nmissing from the list was snow shoveling – after a\nheavy snowfall over Halloween, we had\nessentially no snow all winter, a major shift from\nthe previous year. I hope this newsletter will help\nyou keep track of what’s happening in the\nDepartment, as well as providing information\nabout your fellow alumni. Please make an effort\nto keep in touch with us and with each other. We\nare particularly interested in personal and\nprofessional news we can share with others –\nthanks to those who stopped by or otherwise let us\nknow the news included here.\n\n\nWayne Gray, Former Chair\n\n\nNew Faculty\n\n\n![C:\\users\\econ_dept_wgray\\Econ Dept - Newsletters\\newsletter_12_pics\\IMG_2144.JPG]()\n\n\nMarc Rockmore joined the Department this fall.\nMarc received his BA\nfrom Swarthmore College\nand his PhD from Cornell\nUniversity. His research\nexamines the impact of\nconflict on the\ndevelopment process.\nWhile his dissertation\nexamined people’s\nresponses to the insecurity\ncaused by conflict, his upcoming research looks at\nthe lasting effects of exposure to violence on post-\nconflict economic outcomes. Marc will be\nteaching courses in development economics.\n\n\nFaculty News\n\n\nI’m sorry to have to pass along the sad news of the\ndeaths this spring of two former Clark professors,Roger Van Tassel and Chris Veendorp. Roger\ntaught at Clark for 42 years, including 21 years (!)\nas Department Chair. He had a special passion for\nintroducing undergraduate students to economics\nin Econ 10, and also taught courses in international\neconomics. Chris taught with us for 27 years,\nspecializing in industrial organization and\nmicroeconomic theory. He also served as the\ngraduate advisor for incoming PhD students for\nmany years. They will be missed.\n\n\nThey are being honored and remembered through\nannual departmental prizes. For several years the\nVan Tassel Book Prize has been awarded to the\ntop first-year undergraduate student in\nintroductory economics courses. Beginning this\nfall, we have instituted the E.C.H. Veendorp\nAward, to be given to the student presenting the\nbest field paper in the department’s annual Ph.D.\nresearch poster session.\n\n\nChih Ming Tan is helping organize a conference\non economic growth at the Rimini Center for\nEconomic Analysis in Italy, to be held in May\n2013. He’s also been traveling to various venues,\nincluding Stockholm, Sweden and Cambridge,\nEngland to present his research on the impact of\nchildhood malnutrition on cognitive development.\n\n\nWayne Gray started a three-year term on EPA’s\nEnvironmental Economics Advisory Committee.\n\n\nJackie Geoghegan received the Distinguished\nMember Award from the Northeastern\nAgricultural and Resource Economics Association\n(NAREA), and is now beginning a three-year term\nas Chair of the Economics Department.\n\n\n\n\n### Page 2\n\nRobert Johnston helped coordinate the NAREA\nworkshop on rural and agricultural ecosystem\nservices, supported by a grant from the United\nStates Department of Agriculture. He is currently\nserving on a National Research Council\nCommittee related to fisheries. Jordan is\nworking as an economist at Eastern Research\nGroup with several other Clark alumni. Julianwas appointed as a Senior Macroeconomist at the\nAfrican Development Bank. Sergey Director of\nOperations at New England Sports Academy. He\nis also a co-founder in two start-ups:(service for booking birthday parties online), and\nLokalAd - advertisement at local businesses for\nlocal businesses. Nkechi was busy in another way\n– delivering a beautiful baby girl in June before\nheading back to Ghana. Of the undergraduates,Joe Krahe (BA’12) has started graduate school in\n\n\n\n\n### Page 3\n\nAgricultural and Resource Economics at the\nUniversity of Connecticut; Stephan Cohen(BA’12) is in NYC working for IBM.\n\n\nGraduate Fellowships\n\n\nDan Martin, a PhD student at Clark, is this year’s\nrecipient of the newly established Weinrobe\nAward from the National Association of Business\nEconomics (NABE) Foundation. This award was\nmade possible by a generous donation from Clark\nalumni Paul (MA’85and Ellen (Ph.D’86) Hughes-\nCromwick, in honor of Maury Weinrobe, a former\nProfessor and Chair of the Economics Department\nwho retired recently. Therese worked with the Greater\nWorcester Land Trust to develop a GIS database\nof open space in Worcester, which she’ll be using\nthis year in her economics honors thesis research.\n\n\nAlumni News\n\n\nWe’re happy to report that Malcolm Asadoorian(PhD ‘99) has returned to Massachusetts as\nAcademic Dean of the School of Liberal Arts,\nEducation and Social Sciences at Regis College.\nCongratulations to newly-tenured ClarkiesSuchandra Basu (Ph.D. ‘06) at Rhode Island\nCollege and Soma Ghosh (Ph.D. ’05) at Albright\nCollege. Nagraj Rao (BA ‘08) was named\nResident Advisor to the Director General of the\nLiberia Institute of Statistics and Geo-Information\nServices. William Rutledge (BA ‘70) left his\nposition as an Executive Vice President of the\nNew York Federal Reserve Bank to join the\nPromontory Financial Group. Catherine Chen(BA ‘10) started her studies at NYU Law School,\nfocusing on environmental law, while Eugene\nMiculet (BA ‘10) started the Masters program in\nQuantitative Methods at Columbia University.Michael Derr (BA ’99) is Vice President, Process\nManager for Derivatives & Collateral, IT &\nOperations Model Transformation, State Street in\nBoston. Nick Callender (BA ‘11) is doing an\ninternship at the Inter-American Development\nBank in Washington, DC. Alex (Zheng) Li (BA\n’11) started the economics PhD program at\nCornell.\n\n\nFed Challenge Team Competes at Boston\nFederal Reserve\n\n\n\n(l to r): Prof. Slavtcheva, Joe McClintock (BA ’12), Minnie Bui\n(BA ’13), Ema Vergles (BA ’12) Prof. Hong, Volha Hrytskevich\n(BA ’13).\n\n\nClark’s 2011 Fed Challenge Team competed in the\nNew England Competition of the College Fed\nChallenge. The competition, which is held every\nyear by the Federal Reserve System, brought 22\nteams from colleges in the New England area to\ngive presentations about current economic\nconditions, the outlook for the economy, and\npossible monetary policy options. The team was\nadvised by Professor Chang Hong, and was also\nhelped by Professors Slavtcheva, Gray and Tan.\n\n\n\nAs we get more alumni information, we’ll post it at.
