From Mt Somers take the Ashburton Gorge Road to Mine Rd (next Rd on the right after the walking track access Jig Rd), From AY133\\_4WDStart\\_2022 (E1461665, N5166090 NZTM) follow the main track up-valley and zig zag up onto a broad flat ridgetop, the track mainly follows this ridgetop, sidling around the 800m contour on the Woolshed Creek side before regaining the ridgeline near point 855m. Park at AY133Park2022 (E1464558, N5170926), walk down the 4WD track to Woolshed Creek hut and follow the Mt Somers walkway track towards Pinnacles hut for a short distance until you reach the Water Caves sign at AY133TrackJunc2022(E1465479, N5171166). Follow the track to the water caves entrance, climb out of the creek on the true left and sidle above the water caves section of Morgan Stream, to a small spur. Follow up this spur to the saddle above, AY133Saddle2022 (E14658701, N5171253). From here plot is 295 m at 25deg magnetic. We fit 3 small tents on slightly sloping ground, it would be difficult to find decent spots for more tents. Plot is 80m at 352 from Heliland. From the Andrews Shelter drive 6.7 km SE along the Mt White Rd to BD125\\_4WDStart\\_2022 (E1504690, N5233835). From here follow the 4WD track for 750 m to BD125\\_Park\\_2022 (E1505455, N5233765) to park by a fence. Climb over the fence and head up the obvious steep ridgeline with good animal trails on the ridgetop (the valley to the south of this ridge is apparently poor travel). From a gravelly saddle, head up a mix of vegetation and scree to BD125\\_Peak\\_2022 (E1506075, N5234900, good helicopter landing and campsite (no water) at this point). Head NE along the ridgeline to BD125\\_LeaveRidge\\_2022 (E1506270, N5235265). Plot is 260 m at 291deg Magnetic from here. Head down and slightly right to plot at BD125P2022 (E1506083, N5235449.1). Cairns and branches lead the way across the river which was easily fordable in low river conditions. Join the Avoca Valley track briefly then drive all the way to plot which has excellent camping spots. If you already have the key, drive time is approximately 1hr 15mins. There is an ECAN river gauge downstream at Klondyke, note (1) the river will rise with main divide/headwaters rainfall and/or headwater snowmelt, and (2) the Klondyke gauge lags the flow at the crossing point by several hours (of the order of 8 hours). As a braided river, the route and difficulty of 4WD travel upriver can change significantly with a single flood event. From Mesopotamia, AS132\\_Mesopotamia\\_2022 (E1430490, N5165900 NZTM) take the public gravel road to the public carpark. The 4WD track upriver carries on from here, across the Bush Stream gravel fan. In late Jan 2023 there was a good tracked route across this fan but after high flow in Bush stream this may require rerouting and or digging to get through. The main river crossings on the way upriver were at AS132\\_MainRiverCrossingsJan2023\\_2022 (E1425330, N5175795). It was possible to drive to Growler hut (DOC, 8 bunks, small stream behind hut). Plot is 1 km at 100o magnetic from the hut. An old 4WD track towards plot from the hut could be driven as far as the main Growler fan (track ends in a vertical drop). This is where we camped - it has a shelter, flat ground, and toilets. It took us 1 hour and 10 minutes and was approx. 43 km distance from Hanmer Springs. Return to Tophouse Rd, over the river bridge, then over Malings Pass. This is a true 4WD track and is steep in places and narrow (little room to pass if you meet another vehicle). Permission to enter this area is obtained from North Canterbury DOC. There \\\\\"was\\\\\" a combination lock on an entry gate at the start of Maling Pass, but this was removed (but could be re-instated at any time), so check the website. On the website you will need to enter your vehicle registration plate and date/s in and out. This is done online, and you receive an automatic email response. The drive from Lake Tennyson to a DOC carpark over Maling Pass took us 1 hour and was 15.8 km. At the car park there is also a toilet and flat ground for camping if required. From the carpark, walk along the track for 5 or 6 minutes till you reach a wooden barrier (to prevent vehicles driving further), and a DOC sign for the St James Cycle Trail (E1569930N 5323581). Take a bearing of 121 degrees and walk the 3 to 4 minutes for 220 m through the grassland on the left of the track to reach corner P waratah - which is clearly visible. From here head up the spur on the true right of Ribbonwood stream, it is possible to avoid the scrub by following grass and scree leads on the right (looking up) side of the scrub. Once above the majority of the scrub stick close to the ridgeline, sidling rocky outcrops as required. From BC126\\_Saddle\\_2022 (E1498795, N5227915) the most direct route is to head up the scree ridge to BC126\\_StartClimb\\_2022 (E1498605, N5227570) near a large wide isolated tussock clump and climb up scree from here to BC126\\_SidleStart\\_2022 (E1498310, N5227365), sidle across scree to the spur at BC126\\_Spur\\_2022 (E1498160.0, N5227350) and descend 130 m at 296deg magnetic down the spur to plot at BC126P2022 (E1498077, N5227448). The extra height gain avoids sidling steeper scree with rotten rock outcrops. This is probably the best route both up and down.
